A Wildlife Oasis Opens Atop a Notorious Former Dump
The former landfill is part of a decades-long capping and rewilding project.
Underneath rolling grasslands sit millions of tons of trash, covered by layers of soil, textiles and pipes that capture the liquids and gas produced by the decomposing garbage.
It’s “an engineering marvel,” said Sue Donoghue, New York City’s parks commissioner.
