These states have top earners paying the most in taxes. Where does NJ rank?

It’s no secret that high earners across the country have the highest tax rate.

In fact the upper-class pay about 45% of total personal income taxes to the IRS according to a new study conducted by Smartasset.com.

In the report the personal finance technology company identifies What the Top 1% Pay in Taxes in Each State in which they examined the most recent IRS tax return data to determine the amount nominally and relative to the rest of taxpayers.

Out of the three categories from the key findings New Jersey made two. Below are the results the top earners from the Garden State pay from the two categories.

New Jersey ranks third on the list for the highest effective tax rates by the top 1% of income earners.

  • Average effective tax rate on 1% earners: 27.20%
  • Total income tax paid by top 1%: $30,615,181
  • Number of top 1% returns: 42,437
  • Total income tax share paid by 1%: 37.7%
  • Average effective tax rate for all taxpayers: 16.1%

New Jersey ranks eighth on the list for the gross amount of income tax by the top 1% of income earners.

  • Total income tax paid by top 1%: $30,615,181
  • Number of top 1% returns: 42,437
  • Average effective tax rate on 1% earners: 27.2%
  • Total income tax share paid by 1%: 37.7%
  • Average effective tax rate for all taxpayers: 16.1%
