N.J. is closing its scandal-plagued women’s prison. Its replacement will cost at least $90M.
Three years after Gov. Phil Murphy pledged to close New Jersey’s scandal-plagued women’s prison, state authorities on Thursday announced plans to build a new location “that meets the needs and expectations of a modern correctional facility.”
The state’s women prisoners, currently housed at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Hunterdon County, will eventually be moved to the new facility, which will be built in a more central location near the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County, according to the state Department of Corrections.
