Camden sheriff won't seek re-election – New Jersey Globe
Camden County Sheriff Gilbert “Whip” Wilson said tonight that he will not seek re-election to a fourth term, giving Democrats just ten days to find a new candidate in advance of the March 25 filing deadline.
“After more than 50 years of public service, I would like to fully retire from my public duties and responsibilities. I will leave in good spirits, pleased by the small contributions that I have made in this incredible journey of over a half a century,” Wilson said. “Serving the people of Camden County as the sheriff has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime over the last eight years.”
A former Camden city councilman and Assemblyman, Wilson, 76, is a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam and retired police lieutenant. He was elected sheriff in 2015.
“Every step in my long career has brought different challenges and accomplishments from improving public safety to enhancing the quality of life here in Camden County,” Wilson said. “It is my intention to fulfill all of my obligations as Sheriff until the final day of my term and it is also my intention to assist in the upcoming election cycle.”
