An 11-year-old boy in New Hampshire was freed after being trapped between two boulders near his school for nine hours.

Firefighters used rope, dish soap and friction-reducing sheets to gradually extract the boy from the crevasse between the boulders in Windsor, New Hampshire. They finally managed to slip him out at about 3:15 a.m. on Monday. They had originally arrived on the scene close to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Hillsborough Fire Chief Kenny Stafford said.

The boy was taken to the hospital for examination and was released the same day, according to Wediko School, a residential treatment center the boy attends.

“On Sunday evening, while under supervision, a student exploring a rocky area on campus slipped between two boulders when sticks and debris gave way beneath them,” the school said in a statement Monday.

“Despite multiple staff members’ efforts to free the student, they were unsuccessful and promptly called local emergency rescue services. Emergency responders worked tirelessly through the night, successfully rescuing the student in the early morning.”

Just about every available response team, including some from five other communities, came out to support the rescue, ranging from state police to the Fish and Game Department.

The Manchester Fire Department, which is about 40 minutes away from Hillsborough, was called in because rescuers specifically needed their heavy rescue truck and crew, Manchester Fire Battalion Chief Jon Fosher said.

Even with all hands on deck, first responders struggled for hours to find a safe way to free the boy. They couldn’t move the boulders and chipping away was too dangerous for the trapped boy. So, they resorted to digging their way to him.

“We basically had to tunnel underneath the boulder to get access to the child’s feet which allowed us something to push on from the bottom,” Fosher said.

Fosher chalked up the success to the teamwork between all crews and departments involved.

New Hampshire authorities worked tirelessly overnight to rescue an 11-year-old boy who was stuck between two boulders.

The child was trapped between two boulders on property owned by Wediko Children’s Services, a boarding school in Windsor, New Hampshire. According to Boston 25 News, the child was found on the grounds of Camp Wediko, a camp for children with emotional difficulties.

The Manchester Fire Department told Patch that several agencies were called to the scene shortly before midnight on Sunday. 

The child was found “conscious and alert and located approximately 4 to 5 feet down between boulders with narrow access to either side,” the Patch reported.

“Manchester’s Rescue 1 worked in conjunction with on-scene Fire and EMS companies to clear a tunnel to the side of the boulders, which allowed a member to reach the victim’s legs and assist with removal from the top of the boulders,” the statement read.

Authorities reportedly used shovels, jackhammers, power saws and a lubricant to “vertically hoist” the boy between the boulders. Boston 25 News reported that the child had been stuck for nine hours by the time he was finally removed.

The current condition of the child is unknown, but the Patch reported that he only sustained minor injuries.

In a Facebook post, the Hillsboro Fire Department thanked the agencies that responded to the scene.

“The Hillsboro Fire and EMS would like to thank all of our mutual aid companies that assisted with the technical rescue conducted at Wediko Children’s [S]ervices last night and well into the early morning hours,” the post read.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Manchester Fire Department and the Hillsboro Fire Department for additional information.

Rescuers came to the aid of a child who became wedged between two boulders and was trapped for more than nine hours, a New Hampshire fire chief said Monday.

The child, estimated to be 11 or 12, was pried out of the boulders in Windsor at about 3:15 a.m. and taken to a hospital for evaluation. Windsor is about 30 miles west of Concord, the state capital.

The boulders are near the Wediko School, a residential treatment center for boys in middle school and high school.

Hillsborough Fire Department Chief Kenny Stafford said firefighters got a call to respond shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday. They used ropes and a lubricant to rescue the child.

Messages seeking comment were sent to the fire department, which led the multi-agency rescue effort, and the school.
