Effort to ‘modernize’ eye care shouldn’t come at the expense of patient safety

In a recent New Hampshire Bulletin commentary, Dr. Benjamin Choiniere argued that authorizing optometrists to perform surgery is a necessary step to “modernize” eye care and solve access issues in New Hampshire. As an ophthalmologist practicing in the Granite State, I respect Dr. Choiniere’s desire to serve his patients, but I have seen firsthand how delicate eye surgery can be.
