The worker’s name was being withheld pending notification of family, Great Barrington Police Chief Paul Storti told the newspaper. The National Transportation Safety Board, which announced on social media that it is investigating the incident, indicates the facility involves a railroad contractor.
The accident occurred about 10 a.m. in a remote location near the Sheffield town line, and fire police and fire departments from Great Barrington and Sheffield were both involved in extricating the victim. He was then flown to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., where he died of his injuries.
The Housatonic Railroad operates approximate 38 miles in Massachusetts as part of a 161-mile, three-state system that also includes trackage in Connecticut and New York.
