Mass. weather: Snow, then double-digit subzero wind chills this weekend

After a week of dry, sunny weather, snow and frigid temperatures are expected to return to Massachusetts over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Overnight low temperatures in the low to mid teens are predicted in Eastern and Central Massachusetts Wednesday and Thursday night, while lows in the low to mid single digits are expected in Western Massachusetts, according to the weather service. Highs in the upper 20s and sunny skies are predicted across the state on Thursday, while similar temperatures and cloudy skies are expected on Friday.

Light snow showers are predicted to begin throughout Massachusetts in the early morning on Saturday, according to the weather service. Daily high temperatures are expected to reach the mid to high 20s across the state.

The snow is predicted to cease around noon in Western Massachusetts, while Central Massachusetts could see snowfall until the mid-afternoon, according to the weather service. Eastern Massachusetts may continue to get snowed on into the evening. Little to no accumulation is expected in most of the state, though the eastern coast, Cape and Islands stand the greatest chance of getting up to 2 inches.

Frigid wind chills return Saturday night as temperatures drop into the single digits in Eastern Massachusetts and below zero in Central and Western Massachusetts, according to the weather service. By 6 p.m., wind chill values are predicted to reach -4 degrees in Worcester, -7 degrees in Springfield and -19 in Pittsfield.

The coldest wind chills of the weekend are expected in the early morning on Sunday when values throughout Massachusetts are predicted to drop below zero, according to the weather service. Most communities can expect wind chills between -13 and -19 degrees around 6 a.m. Sunday, while Pittsfield could experience values as low as -27 degrees.

Clear skies and highs in the mid to upper teens are predicted across the state on Sunday, according to the weather service. Temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits in Eastern Massachusetts Sunday night and dip below zero in Central and Western Massachusetts.

Wind chill values in the early morning on Monday are predicted to be slightly less frigid, according to the weather service. Around 6 a.m., Eastern Massachusetts communities can expect wind chills between -7 and -10 degrees, while Worcester and Springfield can expect values around -13 degrees, and Pittsfield can expect wind chills as low as -19 degrees.
