Lawsuit Filed After Compass Medical Suddenly Closes Doors In MA

QUINCY, MA — A class action lawsuit is now on file with the Plymouth County Superior Court against Quincy-based medical company Compass Medical.

The lawsuit comes after Compass abruptly closed doors at all six of its Massachusetts locations, including in Braintree, East Bridgewater, Easton, Middleborough, Quincy and Taunton.

Keches Law Group filed the lawsuit on behalf of Richard Callanan, of Abington, and the roughly 70,000 patients affected by the sudden closure, stating that the company failed to provide “timely notice of their intended closure” to patients at all six locations.

“These patients were left without access to prescription refills and scheduled medical appointments, completely disrupting ongoing and future treatment plans,” the law group said.

Plaintiffs in the case are seeking monetary damages and other relief “injunctive relief arising out of Compass Medical’s unlawful business practices.”

The Quincy-based company released a statement on its website last week stating that it would be shuttering all offices due to a number of unspecified challenges.

“It is with our deepest regret and great sadness to inform you of our imminent plan to close our practices,” the statement read.

“After a steady stream of challenges, we were ultimately forced to make the devastating decision to close all offices of Compass Medical PC effective immediately.”

Compass officials said they would release information online regarding how to continue care, but patients have told news outlets they haven’t heard anything from the company, with some even showing up for scheduled appointments.

Keches officials said news of the closure was also a shock to staff at the practices, many of whom were laid off on Wednesday.

Recently, the company added pages to its website that contain resources for both staff and former patients.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s office confirmed with NBC10 Boston that they are looking into the sudden closure.

“Our office is aware of reports that Compass Medical Group locations closed suddenly today. We are gathering information and in close communication with our partners in the Healey-Driscoll Administration, particularly the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. Affected consumers and patients are encouraged to contact the AG’s office to share their concerns,” a statement read.
