A beach in Maine has cracked a list of best beaches in the country, joining the ranks of those in well-known beach destinations like California, Florida and Hawaii.

Travel company Lonely Planet ranked Sand Beach in Acadia National Park as the 16th best beach in the United States and the “best for walking trails” in a ranking released early March.

It was the only beach in New England to make it onto the list, which featured 23 beaches across the country.

Sand Beach in Acadia is one of country’s best beaches

Lonely Planet ranked Sand Beach in Acadia National Park the nation’s 16th best beach.

What they said: “Sand Beach may be the best spot to dip your toes in the sand at Maine’s famed Acadia National Park. If you plan to visit during the popular summer season, expect some big crowds here. But even a visit during the colder months offers gorgeous coastal views at one of New England’s most beloved national parks.”

The entry warned that the water at Sand Beach stays cold all year-round, even in the summer. But luckily, swimming isn’t the only attraction at the beach. It also provides easy access to hiking and biking trails.

Sand Beach is also a year-round destination: visitors can spot vibrant leaf colors in the fall, while the winter offers “gorgeous coastal views.” The largest sandy beach in Acadia, Sand Beach is also a perfect spot for stargazing, according to the National Park Service.

Sand Beach is five miles from Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island, which offers shops and restaurants.
