“The bullets started flying.” Witness describes shooting on Route 117 in Paris
PARIS, Maine (WMTW) – The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday afternoon there was a police shooting in Paris.
The situation on Route 117 involved officers from South Paris, Oxford, Norway, the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police.
The suspect, who according to witnesses was already in handcuffs during the incident, was taken into custody and taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway to be treated.
One woman who saw part of what happened shared a frightening account with Maine’s Total Coverage.
“I was on my way to Wilton to do a signing and I turned up streaking Mountain Road only to get in the middle of a shootout with just about every police officer in the area,” wrote Linda Marie Mercer on Facebook.
She gave Maine’s Total Coverage permission to share her account.
In an on-camera interview, Monday afternoon, Mercer said “I couldn’t tell if there was a gun in his hand. But he just ran right up out of the ditch, right in the middle of the street where all the police officers were.
And you can see him get right into a vehicle. And then I heard a couple of shots that it seemed like it was from him because the police officers all just returned a barrage of shots on him.”
Officials said no officers were hurt in the incident.
In video shared with Maine’s Total Coverage, police can be heard yelling at the suspect to put their hands in their air.
Police said the Maine Attorney General’s Office was investigating, as is standard protocol in any police shooting.

The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition says over the past two weeks its immigrant defense hotline has seen an uptick in reported ICE detentions.
They say this corresponds with a national shift in ICE activity, including bids for local businesses to cooperate with ICE.
In Maine, the arrests follow a broader trend of targeting Black and brown immigrants, including people navigating immigration proceedings.
The coalition, which represents more than 100 organizations, says it’s ready to protect civil and human rights and is urging immigrants to prepare themselves and their families.

They suggest having the defense hotline ready in case you witness ICE activity, making sure you have important personal documents in case of detention, and reviewing rights around judicial warrants in private spaces, like your home or workplace.

According to Fox Business, about 154 million flowers are sold during the week of Mother’s Day. So it’s safe to say it was a busy day for stores like Estabrook’s Maine Garden Center and Nursery.
Plenty of families stopped by to pick out flowers on Sunday, looking to choose the perfect bouquet for their moms.
“I think Mother’s Day is tradition, you know, and so it’s great to see families here. We have a lot of new families that have come today for the first time with their young children and their mother. Watching the young kids and seeing how excited they are—their eyes light up at all the beautiful flowers,” Tom Estabrook, president of Estabrook’s, said.
Estabrook says Mother’s Day tends to be a great kickoff to the spring season.
