Maine Morning Star wins 3 awards in Maine Press Association contest • Maine Morning Star

Maine Morning Star earned three awards in the 2024 Maine Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, the results of which were announced during a ceremony Saturday at the organization’s annual conference, held in Bar Harbor.

Maine Morning Star’s haul included one third and two second place honors for stories published from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. Having launched in September 2023, this marks the outlet’s first press awards.

The conference also included the Maine Press Association’s 2024 Hall of Fame induction, which honored Naomi Schalit and John Christie, who founded the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, which publishes The Maine Monitor, as well as Bangor Daily News’ longtime sports reporter Larry Mahoney.

Bangor Daily News journalist Sawyer Loftus was named Journalist of the Year.

The MPA Hall of Fame, established in 1998, honors newspaper people with Maine connections who have made outstanding contributions to the profession. Founded in 1864, the Maine Press Association is one of the oldest professional news organizations in the nation.
