Maine Men’s Hockey wins overtime thriller on homecoming

ORONO, Maine (WABI) – It was a wild night of hockey at the Alfond.

On Saturday night Maine Men’s Hockey hosted Quinnipiac looking for the weekend sweep.

The Black Bears got off to a hot start.

With goals from Taylor Makar, Owen Fowler,  Ross Mitton and Thomas Freel Maine found themselves with a 4-1 lead early into the second period.

But the visitors slowly chipped away at Maine’s advantage eventually taking the 5-4 lead with 13:22 left in regulation.

However, Maine still had quite a bit of homecoming magic in store.

With an empty net behind them Maine scored the equalizer as Brandon Holt found the back of the net with 0:28 left to play sending the game into overtime.

In the end it was the captain David Breazeale who sent Black Bear nation home happy as he scored the game winner in overtime with roughly 36 seconds before a shootout.
