HANCOCK COUNTY, Maine (WABI) – An 88-year-old man has died after the side-by-side ATV he was a passenger in broke through the ice.

It happened Friday night around 6 p.m. on Spring River Lake in Hancock County.

Authorities say Floyd Hardison of Waltham was fishing with his son and grandsons during the day.

The crew was riding their ATVS back to their vehicles on the shore when the side-by-side ATV that Hardison was riding in and was driven by Hardison’s adult grandson broke through the ice approximately 400 yards from shore, officials said.

The grandson was able to free himself from the sinking ATV and get out onto the ice, but Floyd was unable to get himself out and sank to the bottom with the ATV.

Wardens say Floyd’s body was recovered in about ten feet of water.
