Maine father accused of killing infant daughter appears in court
ORRINGTON, Maine (WGME) — Bail has been set at $250,000 for a Maine man accused of killing his infant daughter.
Police responded to a call about an unresponsive 12-week-old infant in Orrington on Jan. 16.
The baby, Lyla Samuels, was taken to a hospital in Bangor.
On Saturday, police arrested the infant’s father, 24-year-old Shawn Samuels of Orrington, for domestic violence elevated aggravated assault and two counts of violation of bail.
Lyla died on Jan. 18. Samuels was then charged with murder.
An autopsy was performed at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, and the manner of death was ruled homicide.
According to the Bangor Daily News, the autopsy found broken ribs and brain swelling.
Samuels made his first court appearance on Wednesday. The BDN reports a judge set his bail at $250,000. He is being held at the Penobscot County Jail.
Samuels will appear in court again next month.
