Maine Central Institute and Pittsfield Police teaming up for free community Thanksgiving dinner
PITTSFIELD, Maine (WABI) – If you’re in the mood for a traditional Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, look no further than Maine Central Insitute in Pittsfield.
“We’ve got some garlic-roasted turkeys. We’ve got sweet potato casserole, three different kinds of pies,” said Elizabeth York, director of dining services at Maine Central Institute.
Each year, MCI provides a Thanksgiving meal to students, many of whom are attending from other parts of the world and will not be able to make it home for the holiday.
Last year, they extended the invite to the greater Pittsfield community.
With the help of the Pittsfield Police Department, they were able to serve nearly 100 people.
They expect to double their attendance this year.
“It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you’re doing, there are people out there that really care about you, and it just brings the community together,” said Erica Rock of the Pittsfield Police Department.
And don’t worry, there will be plenty of turkeys to go around.
“We’re cooking 45 because they are fairly big birds, but we got 107 turkeys donated from the community which says a lot. Not to mention that we got cash donations from the community. It definitely shows that people in the community really want to help,” York explained.
“We have another 13 cooked turkeys and dinners that we’re going to provide to residents of the community so that on Thanksgiving Day they don’t even have to cook their turkey,” said Vincent They just have to cook their sides. We’re going to bring them a nice, cooked turkey they can set on the table, cut it, and they’re good to go,” said Pittsfield Police Chief, Vicente Morris.
If you’d like a meal delivered to you or a ride to the meal on Thursday, the Pittsfield Police Department is only a phone call away.
“Contact the police department via Facebook messenger or give us a call. You don’t have to eat alone. You don’t have to go hungry. We’re here,” Rock said.
The Community Thanksgiving Meal will be held in the MCI Dining Hall on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The loons are back and nesting on lakes statewide and we need your help to monitor their population! Every year since 1983, hundreds of volunteers have gone out to lakes and ponds across Maine on the third Saturday in July. These volunteers submit data about the number of loons they observe from 7 to 7:30 am, which gives us an excellent “snapshot” of the loon population. The Annual Loon Count allows us to monitor how the number of adults and chicks has changed over the past 40 years and make sure we know how to best protect their population!
This year, the Loon Count will take place on Saturday, July 18. We encourage you to join a group of over 1,800 volunteers and help us count the number of loons in Maine! The Loon Count occurs on lakes and ponds all across the state and volunteers can survey by boat or shore (you don’t have to have a boat to take part!).
If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact us at conserve@maineaudubon.org and tell us if there’s a specific lake or area you’d like to survey. We are always aiming to expand our coverage across the state and particularly encourage volunteers in northern Maine to get involved!
The deadline to sign up for the Annual Loon Count is July 10, so please reach out as soon as possible.
If you can’t make it on July 18, or if one day just isn’t enough for you, you can monitor loons throughout the summer.Through our Loon Pair Monitoring project, you can submit observations of breeding loon pairs over several months to help us better understand nest and chick success across Maine.
