Republicans in Maine are trying to do what Republican legislators throughout the nation have achieved: move payments that may make it tougher to vote, ostensibly to forestall fraud and restore public confidence in elections (“Lawmakers contemplate invoice requiring Maine voters to point out picture ID at polls,” Feb. 6).
Sen. Matt Pouliot, the writer of the invoice, cited polling that confirmed solely 36% of People believe within the election system. Pouliot makes use of that as justification for his proposed invoice (though he indicated that he personally believes Maine elections are truthful). The issue with the convoluted logic behind these election reform payments is that the one motive so many People have diminished confidence in our elections is that Republicans have been repeatedly and inaccurately describing them as rife with fraud and dishonest.
Regardless of probably the most carefully studied voting in my lifetime, our final a number of elections have confirmed to be exceptionally truthful, with scant proof of any fraud or misconduct. Passing new laws (that can make it tougher for Democratic-leaning voters of coloration to solid a poll) is gross overreach. What if Republicans as an alternative knowledgeable their constituents, in no unsure phrases, that our elections are certainly truthful, and that the doubts sown about them prior to now have been unfounded?
No want for brand new legal guidelines, only for the reality.
