BREWER, Maine (WABI) – American Legion officials kicked off their 105th annual state convention to honor and recognize the world’s largest veteran organization.

Every entity is in attendance including American Legion riders.

Jason Hall is the State Adjutant for the American Legion.

He said besides getting the chance to catch up with friends and honor their mission, the convection is a great networking opportunity.

“We have 16,000 members in Maine, and this is their opportunity to show up and see friends they haven’t seen in a few years, so we make a whole weekend out of it, and then we end with an executive committee meeting with the newly elected officers,” said Hall.

Brewer Mayor Jenn Morin welcomed the members and encouraged them all to enjoy one the many communities they serve.

Hall said this event isn’t just for them.

It’s to highlight the good work done in Maine communities which is why they present multiple awards to leaders and local students.

They will present the Law Enforcement of the year, Eagle Scout of the year, Firefighter of the year and so much more.

It ensures community leaders young and old understand they have a uniting force on their side.

For Hall and each member of the American Legion, their work means so much more.

“It’s a fantastic feeling,” said Hall. “A lot of these people volunteered to join the military, and when they got out, they lost that comradeship, and this is an opportunity for the men and women to get back together and still serve their country.”

As the saying goes, it starts at home.

“By serving your community, you make the state stronger, and if your state is stronger, your nation’s stronger, so it’s really nice to see all of the different people from all over Maine coming together for a common purpose of serving others,” said Hall.
