USS Iowa submarine commissioned in Connecticut, now in active service

GROTON, Conn. (WFSB) – The latest Virginia-class nuclear powered submarine to join the U.S. fleet. The vessel was commissioned in a ceremony on Saturday morning in Groton.

“United States Ship Iowa is in commission, and I am in command,” said Captain Gregory Coy.

Hundreds of veterans as well family and friends of the 140 crew members for the USS Iowa gathered at Naval Submarine Base New London for the commissioning of the newest nuclear powered submarine to join the navy’s fleet.

“377 feet of ruthless, silent and unmatched American strength,” added Commander Daryl Coudle. “Built by the grit and determination of American shipyard workers.”

This vessel is the third to be named for the state of Iowa, the previous ship was in service from 1943 to 1990 and served in World War II, The Korean War and the Gulf War.

This is also the first submarine to specifically accommodate women sailors.

“They remain our nation’s first line of defense, the tip of its spear,” expressed Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. “It’s stabilizing representative in a turbulent world. In just minutes, the new USS Iowa will officially begin carrying forward that proud tradition. It will do so with the skill and bravery of the American sailors, men and women alike, who will make up its first crew.”

“To captain Coy and the crew, please know that the navy’s decision to hold port Iowa here in Groton means that you’re going to be welcomed and honored in the submarine capital of the world for as long as you are stationed here,” said Representative Joe Courtney.
