Outstanding Milestones By College Students From Granby And East Granby
GRANBY-EAST GRANBY, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire. More great college achievements will be noted as they are received in the coming weeks.
Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT
- More than 800 Eastern Connecticut State University students graduated in the 2023-24 academic year, which culminated with two commencement ceremonies this May at the conclusion of the spring 2023 semester. The University’s undergraduate ceremony occurred May 14 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT, and the graduate-level ceremony occurred May 11 on Eastern’s campus. Among the local graduates were Kristian Kowalski of East Granby, Bachelor of Science in environmental earth science; Jack Sobota of East Granby, Bachelor of Science in business information systems; Aidan Hennessy of Granby, Bachelor of Science in computer science; and Conor Hennessy of Granby, Bachelor of Science in business administration.
St. Lawrence University, Canton NY
- Phoebe Jones from Granby has been named to St. Lawrence University’s Dean’s List for achieving academic excellence during the spring 2024 semester. Jones, a member of the Class of 2027, attended Granby Memorial High School. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student must have completed at least four courses and have an academic average of 3.6 based on a 4.0 scale for the semester.
University of Hartford, West Hartford CT
- Morgan Egan and William Pitney, both of East Granby, and Grace Yoder of Granby earned President’s List honors for the spring 2024 semester. The President’s List recognizes a select group of students reaching the highest level of academic standing. To be placed on the President’s List, students must maintain a GPA of at least a 3.75 and receive grades of C or better.
- A half-dozen local residents earned spots on the Dean’s List for the spring 2024 semester. They were Kyle Lavitt, Jered Volpe, Shane Gove and Alex Stelly, all of Granby, and Megan Benner and Jearlin Cabrera, both of East Granby. The Dean’s List recognizes students achieving superior academic standing. The requirement, with some exceptions based on school or college, is a grade point average of at least 3.0 and no grade below C.

2 arrested in connection to shooting at Waterbury event hall
Two people have been arrested in connection to a shooting at an event hall in Waterbury last weekend.
Officers received information about a shooting at So Blu’Niq on Wolcott Street on Sunday around 5 a.m. It was also reported that a victim from the incident had admitted themselves to the hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.
Police said they made contact with the 27-year-old victim at the hospital. According to investigators, she had a gunshot wound to her abdomen and her arm. She is reportedly still admitted and receiving treatment, but is considered to be in stable condition.
Investigators responded to So Blu’Niq and found a crime scene. Authorities said they determined there was an isolated disturbance that happened inside the business that escalated to a firearm being discharged and the woman being hit by a projectile.
While investigating, authorities said they also determined that at the time of the incident, liquor and alcoholic beverages were illegally being sold without a permit or license.
Warrants were secured for a 50-year-old woman from Waterbury and a 29-year-old man from Waterbury.
The woman was taken into custody on Friday and is being charged with illegal sale of alcohol. She is set to appear in court on June 10.
The man was taken into custody on Wednesday and is facing charges including assault, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of a pistol/revolver by a convicted felon, illegal discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment and carrying a pistol without a permit. He appeared in court on Thursday on a $1.5 millon bond.
