Providence was selected as a No. 3 seed in the NIT.

Providence basketball’s season isn’t over just yet. The Friars will face another New England team — a one-time Big East rival, Boston College — in the NIT tournament.

Providence was snubbed in Sunday night’s NCAA Tournament Selection Show, being left out of the 68-team field despite winning a pair of Big East Tournament games. Later, at 9:30 p.m., Providence was selected as a No. 3 seed in the first half of the 32-team NIT bracket and will host the first-round game.

Boston College compiled a 19-15 overall record, 8-12 in the ACC — good for an 11th-place finish in the 15-team conference. First-round play is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. Time and date of the Providence-Boston game was not announced immediately. Like the Friars, the Eagles, a founding member of the Big East, won two games, against Miami and Clemson, in their conference tournament before being eliminated.

In the last matchup between the two schools, Providence won, 100-95, in overtime at Conte Forum on Dec. 4, 2018. The Friars lead the all-time series with BC, 62-50 — a rivalry that dates back to 1946 when they first met at the Boston Garden.

The Friars were last NIT entrants in 2019 and lost, 84-72, in the first round to Arkansas. The NIT championship is set for April 4 in Indianapolis.
