Free blockbusters + the great outdoors = awesome summer nights around Boston

‘Tis the season for blockbusters, for swashbuckling and monsters, teen romance and animated adventures. But it’s also summer, so you want to be outdoors. Thankfully you can munch on popcorn while watching a shark eat people or a superhero save the day or whatever your blockbuster taste is and still be outside. And you can do it all for free.

Parks, beaches and city spots host free movies all summer. Here is where to start:

“The Mummy,” June 21, sunset, the Greenway’s Wharf District Park

Brendan Fraser tries to be Harrison Ford and does a half decent job. Before Fraser and Rachel Weisz battle the diabolical reincarnation of the Egyptian priest Imhotep, come see Brown University archaeologist and Egyptologist Dr. Laurel Bestock. The good doctor will discuss her own excavation and archaeological field work in Egypt ahead of the screening. More movies at coolidge.org

“Guardians of the Galaxy,” June 23, 7 pm, Boynton Yards, Somerville

Remember when  Chris Pratt was the schlubby, loveable goofball Andy Dwyer on “Parks and Recreation” before he was the hunky, loveable goofball Peter Quill in the Marvel universe? Those were the days. Anyway, Boynton Yards has games, candy and free movies all summer – come back for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “The Little Mermaid.” More movies at www.eventbrite.com/e/friday-flicks-outdoor-movie-night-at-boynton-yards-free-tickets-643044853467

“The Secret Life of Pets” & “Top Gun: Maverick,” June 27, 5 p.m., Dawes Field, Cambridge

Double feature! If you’re the kind of person that wants to see animated pets back-to-back with Tom Cruise’s need for speed, well, kudos, you do you. East Cambridge Business Association will be handing out free popcorn. Food trucks will be there and drinks will be there (and so will “Shrek” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” later this summer). More movies at: cambridgecrossing.com/events

“Jaws II,” June 29, sunset, Kelly’s Roast Beef, Revere

Music, popcorn, cotton candy and a shark movie that’s not as great as the original. But hey, it’s still terrifying. All summer Revere Beach will host these free movie parties including screenings of “Karate Kid” and “Back to the Future.” More movies at revererec.org/pre-school-programs

“Dirty Dancing,” July 12, 7:30, Athlete’s Park Hills

Nobody puts Baby in a corner! (What? You were expecting a different “Dirty Dancing” quote?) Boston Landing’s Athlete’s Park Hills hosts a monthly movie night. This edition comes with a live DJ, free cotton candy, a cash bar, food stations and Patrick Swayze (swoon). Limited chairs available, BYO blankets, themed outfits encouraged. You’ll have the time of your life. More movies at bostonlandingdevelopment.com.

“Onward,” July 29, sunset, Hatch Shell

Massachusetts State Parks in the city host multiple movies on multiple nights from July 29 into September. Start your Hollywood quest with Pixar’s “Onward” and go on to see “Cruella,” “Uncharted,” and more family-friendly fare. More movies at mass.gov/info-details/dcr-movies-in-the-parks

“Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” Aug. 15, 7:15, Ringer Playground

The Mayor’s Movie Nights host free flicks (and free popcorn) all summer long at different city parts. While there will be plenty of expected choices (Marvel movies, kids films, etc), why not see the weirdest choice? Live-action/stop-motion animated mockumentary comedy-drama film “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” is, well, hmm, it’s hard to describe. But know that audiences and critics love it, saying it’s “poignant, profound, and utterly heartwarming.” More movies at: boston.gov/departments/parks-and-recreation/parks-movie-nights.
