The Boston Marathon is back for its 128th annual competition on April 15. As always, the prestigious race is held on Patriots’ Day.
The marathon, while well-respected on its own, serves as a celebration for the United States and the pride its citizens in Massachusetts possess. Patriots’ Day isn’t a federal holiday but it is a state holiday in Massachusetts and Maine.
It honors the first battles of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The 26.2-mile race is one of the major celebrations of the country’s origin. It will begin at 9 a.m. in Hopkinton and end on Boylston Street.
The day will also feature an 11:10 a.m. first pitch at Fenway Park, with the Red Sox donning the yellow-and-blue City Connect jerseys.
The 2023 Boston Marathon winners were Evans Chebet (professional men), Hellen Obiri (professional women), Marcel Hug (men’s wheelchair), Susannah Scaroni (women’s wheelchair), Zachary Stinson (men’s handcycles) and Alicia Dana (women’s handcycles).
