Ann Arbor police chief named new Boston police commissioner

ANN ARBOR – Police Chief Michael Cox is headed again to Boston.

Ann Arbor Police Division’s prime legislation enforcement official was named as the following police commissioner by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu on Wednesday, July 13.

Cox, 57, joined AAPD in 2019 after a 30-year profession within the Boston Police Division. He was unanimously confirmed by metropolis council and praised by Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor throughout his affirmation.

“Having grown up right here [Boston], having served in lots of roles throughout the Boston Police Division and roles elsewhere, Chief Cox is uniquely positioned to construct the general public security infrastructure that Boston deserves,” stated Mayor Wu in a launch. “He’ll proceed constructing on the group belief and group policing that our metropolis has led on for many years.”

Cox will start his new function on August 15 and was chosen after a six-month search.

He beforehand held a number of positions with the Boston Police Division together with Bureau Chief and Superintendent of the Bureau of Skilled Improvement, a commander of the Operations Division, the Commander of the Forensic Division and Assistant Bureau Chief of the Bureau of Investigative Companies.

Throughout his time with Boston Police Division, he obtained two Medals of Honor and quite a few awards.

“I need to thank Mayor Wu for the chance to return again house and serve the residents of Boston,” Cox stated in a launch. “The Boston Police Division must appear to be the communities which we serve and embody each resident to listen to what’s necessary so we are able to serve higher. I took on public service as a result of I needed to assist the general public and provides again to the communities during which I lived.”

In 2020, Cox was positioned on paid administrative go away from Ann Arbor Police Division for a “personnel matter” and allegations that he created a hostile work surroundings.
