Wisconsin farm hosts microgreens demonstration in Marquette

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) – A Wisconsin farm demonstrated how people can grow and cook microgreens at home on Sunday.

The presentation was held at the Marquette Seventh Day Adventist Church in Negaunee. New Leaf Farms grows and sells microgreens in central Wisconsin.

Guests learned about vegetable microgreens, such as broccoli and speckled peas. Microgreens grow longer than sprouts, and only the tops of the plants are consumed.

For $30, they could also purchase microgreen starter kits. The kits came with advice and beginner-friendly instructions for at-home growing. A plant-based dinner was served like a spring mix salad with different microgreens.

New Leaf Farms said microgreens have high health benefits.

“All kinds of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants,” New Leaf Farms Owner Angela Castleberg said. “Sulforaphane, that’s a big one that’s in broccoli that helps fight cancer, and they are four to 40 times, by weight, the nutrition of the adult plants.”

Castleberg also said growing them at home is fun and educational. She encourages people to add microgreens to their diet.
