DULUTH, MN. (Northern News Now) – The University of Minnesota Duluth womens hockey led the second-ranked Wisconsin Badgers by three goals heading in to the third period on Saturday night but would end up losing 5-4.

Graduate senior Reece Hunt got the Bulldogs on the board midway through the first period with assists from Ida Karlsson and Hanna Baskin on the only goal in the first by either team.

The Bulldogs would extend the lead as senior Nina Jobst-Smith scored three minutes in the second period before finding sophomore Danielle Burgen just two minutes later to make it 3-0.

Just two minutes after Burgen’s goal, Wisconsin would score their first of the game to bring it within two goals.

It would grow stagnant for both teams until Wisconsin’s Kirsten Simms scored the game-winning goal in the final two minutes to give UW the 5-4 win and a series sweep on the road.

Freshman Ève Gascon was in the net and picked up 41 saves in the loss.
