The South Dakota State Jackrabbits (4-1) will host the conference-rival Youngstown State Penguins (2-4) this weekend at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
The Jackrabbits have been clicking on all cylinders, wielding the nation’s 16th-best scoring offense (32.4 PPG) and sixth-best scoring defense (14.8 PPG allowed). They have been dominant at home, going 3-0 and outscoring opponents 129-19. SDSU has scored at least 41 points in two straight games and three of the past four.
QB Mark Gronowski has racked up 978 passing yards and nine passing TDs to go with 82 ground yards and two rushing TDs. SDSU running back Amar Johnson has added 416 ground yards and four TDs, as well as 12 catches for 98 yards. Wideout Griffin Wilde has also been very good, hauling in 27-of-31 targets for 345 yards and three TDs.
Youngstown State has not enjoyed anywhere near the level of success as its MVFC rivals. The Penguins have ranked in the bottom 25 in scoring defense in the nation, surrendering 33.7 PPG. Its offense has been ranked 40th, however, averaging 28.3 PPG.
QB Beau Brungard has been a bit of a rollercoaster, racking up 1,013 yards and six TDs but also throwing six interceptions in six games. Brungard’s legs help him, though, as he has amassed 473 yards and six rushing scores on the season. Running backs Tyshon King and Ethan Wright have added a combined 647 yards and eight TDs.
