South Dakota Senate bill has a creative solution to fund women’s prison

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – A new prison for women is being built in Rapid City but there are still some questions about how it will be paid for.

The amount asked for is about $50 million in total for the construction of the prison and Senate Bill 50 would secure the funding from a few different places.

$21 million would come from the incarceration construction fund and would be matched by an additional $21 million from the state’s general fund. Lastly, $2.5 million is coming from the American Rescue Plan Act to install the facility’s water and sewage.

The reason for this type of proposal is to pay for the facility outright rather than taking the money in bonds.
