South Dakota part of the new IRS Direct File program

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – The dreaded tax filing deadline is coming up next month and the IRS is looking to make things a little smoother with their new Direct File program.

The IRS Direct File program is in its early stages right now with only twelve states eligible to use the service, luckily, South Dakota is one of those states.

The free program allows filers to fill out their taxes online with the aim of making the whole process easier for people to complete.

Right now, South Dakotans can head over to the IRS Direct File website to see if they are eligible and if so, can finish their filing right there.

Since the program is still in its infancy, officials are encouraging anyone living in the twelve pilot states to check and see if they can use it so that the IRS can determine if there is a need for the program nationally.

”It’s convenient, it’s accurate, it’s secure which is super important to us all, it’s free as I said, and it’s easy to use so much so that you can use it on your cell phone,” said Tanya Román the News Media Analyst for the IRS.

Román says there isn’t a concrete plan to expand the program nationally.
