RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – An increase to a phone fee regarding the 911 emergency line is in the works in the South Dakota State Legislature.

The $1.25 emergency surcharge per line that you are billed every month on your phone could see an increase of $0.75 this legislative session, making your monthly payment $2.00.

The money collected by the phone company is passed on to the state government to help pay for emergency services at the county level through the 911 emergency response program.

South Dakota’s county distribution report through Jan. 4, 2024, shows Pennington County with 115,436 total lines, this number was reported back in Nov. 2023, netting a total of just under $98,836 for the county.
