Meta weighs in on South Dakota age verification bill
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Meta has weighed in on an age verification bill moving through the South Dakota legislature.
Senate Bill 180 would require parents to approve app-store downloads for their kids. Global Safety Policy Director for Youth at Meta Nicole Lopez says parental involvement on apps is beneficial to kids and teenagers. She says involvement allows parents to ensure their kids’ online time is appropriate.
“We know from talking to parents that they feel overwhelmed, teens are hopping from app to app, and on average, according to University of Michigan study, they’re on an average of 40 apps per week, which is a staggering number,” Lopez said.
Senate Bill 180 was introduced last week. It was referred to the Senate judiciary committee.
