South Dakota
If there’s an animal dead in the neighborhood, who you goin’ to call? Dead Animal Recovery!
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – We see them living their everyday lives, trying to stay away from human interaction, but occasionally they end up crossing the road at the wrong time.
State Farm and Pewtrusts both claim South Dakota ranks number four in the nation when it comes to animal-vehicle collisions, citing a 1 in 53 chance someone would hit an animal. In Rapid City, if this were to happen, a partnership between Pennington County and the city would mean the Dead Animal Recovery team would be sent to the location.
“Last year we picked up about 500, we had 500 calls for dead animal recovery. That includes deer, cats, dogs, raccoons, skunks pretty much any animal we will pick up,” said Rapid City Public Works program development manager Jesse Rieb.
While the service itself is niche, the need is the opposite, with DAR being a good reason dead animals aren’t seen on the side of the roads, keeping those streets roadkill-free.
If you have a request for DAR, you can call (605) 394-2192 for Pennington County Dispatch, or you can call Rapid City’s Public Works Call Center at (605) 791-5577.
