Ohio State men’s volleyball swept by Grand Canyon in NCAA Tournament, ends 2024 season

Ohio State men’s volleyball came into the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal with history on its side against Grand Canyon University, having beaten the Antelopes in 16 of their 19 previous meetings.

History did not matter Tuesday night in Long Beach, California. No. 3 Grand Canyon beat No. 6 Ohio State in three sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) to end the Buckeyes’ 2024 season.

After Grand Canyon took the first two sets, which included 16 ties, Ohio State tried to regain momentum with its season in the balance. The Buckeyes took two separate two-point leads, including a three-point run that included kills by Shane Wetzel and Jacob Pasteur.

But an 8-4 run turned the tide back toward the Antelopes, which secured the sweep with a four-point third-set win.

Wetzel led Ohio State with 12 kills, but also had five errors. Pasteur, the former first-team All-American and MIVA Player of the Year, posted a .103 hit percentage with 11 kills and eight errors.

The Buckeyes never held a lead larger than two points against the Antelopes.

Camden Gianni led Grand Canyon with 12 kills

Grand Canyon holds a two-game win streak against Ohio State after beating the Buckeyes in five sets in the third game of the 2023 season.

Neither Ohio State nor Grand Canyon took control early in a first set that included 10 ties and no lead larger than three points. The Antelopes took the two-point win in the first set by securing three of the final five points including a set-ending kill by outside hitter Jackson Hickman.

Ohio State played catch up for the entire second set. The Buckeyes never held a lead despite six ties. Grand Canyon found its groove late, ending the second set with a 7-3 run to earn the five-point victory.

Ohio State had two three-set losses in 2024 to No. 4 UCLA March 10 and to Purdue Fort Wayne Match 16.

Ohio State entered the NCAA Tournament after beating Lindenwood for the program’s 19th MIVA Tournament win. It was the Buckeyes’ 10th time they had won back-to-back tournament titles.

The Buckeyes have appeared in 24 NCAA Tournaments, but have won 17 of its 42 tournament games. Ohio State has three national championships in 2011, 2016 and 2017.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Stormy conditions are back in the area forecast on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service is calling for a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow with the greatest chance coming during the afternoon hours. Moderate breezes are expected throughout the day, calming slightly late in the evening with overnight lows dipping into the lower 60s. Thursday also has a chance to see more thunderstorm activity with highs topping out in the mid 70s.

Hazardous weather outlook

An Air Quality Advisory for ground level ozone remains in effect until midnight Tuesday night for Cuyahoga and surrounding counties. Sensitive groups with breathing difficulties should monitor their outdoor activities at this time.

Extended forecast for Northeast Ohio

Skies will clear a bit Thursday night as overnight lows drop to around 60 degrees. Friday kicks off the long holiday weekend with mostly sunny skies in the morning along with a slight chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm and highs in the upper 70s.

Chillicothe man injured in motorcycle crash on Ohio 772

CHILLICOTHE – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a motorcycle injury crash that occurred on Ohio 772 near milepost six in Ross County.

On May 20, at approximately 6:13 p.m., a 1999 Harley Davidson 883 motorcycle, ridden by Tony H. Davis, 56, of Chillicothe, was traveling northbound on Ohio 772. While approaching up-ahead traffic in the northbound lane, the Harley Davidson motorcycle crossed the centerline, overturned, and traveled off the left side of the roadway, where it struck a utility pole and a ditch, according to a news release.

Davis was transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, by MedFlight for serious injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on the scene by Huntington Township Fire/EMS and MedFlight.

Ohio 772 near milepost six was temporarily reduced to one lane for approximately two hours.

This crash remains under investigation

Nikola Jokic gives former Ohio State guard Mike Conley high praise

If you didn’t see the NBA Western conference semifinals earlier this week, the Minnesota Timberwolves went into the defending champions’ arena and knocked out the Denver Nuggets.

Three-time MVP, Nikola Jokic, had his team rolling into halftime, but the T-Wolves mounted a huge comeback and eventually outlasted the Nuggets. Former Ohio State star guard, Mike Conley Jr., finally ended his Game 7 woes, and following the victory, Jokic had some high praise for the Buckeye.

Jokic went on to say that Conley is “the most underrated player in the NBA probably. I love that guy. He’s so good.” The guard scored just 10 points, but did have 8 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals in the series-clinching victory.

If you would have told me that that Conley would have has the best career out of the 2007 Buckeyes team, I would have thought you were crazy, but here we are. He now is just eight wins away from his first NBA Championship.
