ORLANDO, Fla. – Ohio State’s run to the NCAA Championship comes up a match short as the Buckeyes fell on Sunday to No. 5 Virginia 4-0.
The Buckeyes had a great run in Orlando, knocking off No. 6 Georgia and No. 2 TCU on their way to the final match. They finish the season with a record of 34-3.
Freshman Jack Anthrop was 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament and was up a set today. He was named to the All-Tournament team at the No. 6 singles position. The doubles team of Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy went 4-2 in the six NCAA Tournament matches and were named to the All-Tournament Team at No. 3 doubles.
Virginia won a closely contested doubles point and then took that momentum into singles and collected wins on courts 1-2-3.
Doubles
- Virginia took the upper hand midway through the doubles point and would hold on to secure the point with wins on courts one and two.
- On court three, Kingsley and Tracy got the first doubles win. They won an unreal deuce point to take the first break at 3-1. The teams would trade breaks later in the set and the Buckeyes would hold for a 6-3 win.
- On court two, Virginia got back-to-back breaks and rolled to a 6-2 victory.
- Court one, Virginia went up a break a 3-1 and held that edge throughout. The Buckeyes had a deuce point break chance at 2-4 but couldn’t convert. They were also up 0-30 at 3-5 but Virginia was able to hold to win the match 6-3.
Singles
- UVA kept the momentum from the doubles point and would get straight set wins on courts one, two and three to win the match.
- James Trotter and Alexander Bernard split their first two sets on courts four and five. Trotter remains undefeated on the year at 27-0.
- Jack Anthrop battled to win his opening set in a tiebreaker and was leading 1-0 in the second set when the match was halted.
