Ohio police officer, military veteran killed in line-of-duty ambush, suspect found dead: report
A manhunt has ended in Ohio for the suspect who killed a military veteran, who was part of the Euclid Police Department for less than a year, during an ambush on Saturday night.
According to WJW, just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, Euclid police officer Jacob Derbin, 23, was killed when a gunman ambushed him during a disturbance call to a residence.
Derbin was taken to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries, WJW reported.
The suspect, who Euclid Police have identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, 24.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were assisting the Euclid Police Department in locating Vaughn, who was described as being around 6’3, 215 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Police believe Vaughn, who is a convicted felon and was wanted for violating conditions of his community supervision, fled the scene following the fatal shooting.
On Sunday evening, WJW reported that the manhunt for Vaughn was over as he had been found deceased inside a residence.
Police told WJW he was heavily armed, and it is not yet clear how he died, but an investigation is ongoing.
Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer told WJW that Derbin was an “incredible” person and that the entire department was “devastated.”
“He was an amazing human being. Just a great heart. Had an incredible smile. The world’s a better place with him in it,” Meyer said.

Derbin had been an officer with the department for the last 10 months, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost released a statement and vowed to make sure that justice is served.
“The promise to protect is signed with the blood of our officers. The killer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and will receive the full measure of justice,” Yost wrote in a statement on X.
Yost continued his post, sharing his condolences with the family of Derbin.
“It is a cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day, and that this murder happened just as we prepare to solemnize our fallen during Police Memorial Week. My heart burns with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department.” Derbin was in his first year with the department,” – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also offered his condolences to the community of Euclid.
“Fran and I offer our deepest condolences to Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin’s family and his brothers and sisters at @Euclid_PD. His bravery and dedication to the Euclid community will not be forgotten,” DeWine wrote in post on X.

DeWine proclaimed that in honor of the life and service of Officer Derbin, all flags would be flown at half-staff on all public buildings amid grounds throughout Cuyahoga County, the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffle Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower on Sunday and will remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of his funeral. He added that all public buildings across the state of Ohio could also participate.
Derbin was engaged to Liv Wuebker. The couple were set to be married on July 27 in Minister, Ohio, according to their wedding page on The Knot.
“An awful tragedy. We are going to miss you Jacob. Thank for serving your country in Kuwait, and continuing to serve and protect your community when you came back. Most of all, thank you for coming into our family and loving all of us. Especially Liv. You’ll always be part of our family, and forever my first brother. We will always miss you,” Skylar Wuebker, the soon-to-be brother-in-law of Officer Derbin, wrote in a post on Facebook.

A chance for strong storms overnight on May 18 precedes a cooldown for the rest of the week. Here’s what you can expect.

Central Wisconsin will see a small chance of storms overnight Monday, May 18, and cool temperatures for the rest of this week with rain likely again on Friday, May 22.
A complex of storms will move into the central Wisconsin area from the west near midnight on May 18, which could bring heavy downpours, gusty winds up to 40 mph, lightning and small hail, Scott Berschback, meteorologist with National Weather Service in Green Bay, told a USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reporter.
There is a small potential for stray showers and storms in the afternoon on May 18 but nothing widespread, Berschback said. Due to the storms arriving later in the day, they are predicted to be weaker than some initial reports and a small threat for tornadoes drops to zero after midnight, he said.
Cool temperatures expected for the rest of the week
A cold front will swing through the area on Tuesday, May 19, bringing a round of some potentially strong showers and storms in the morning that are expected to wrap up by noon, Berschback said.
Temperatures will be warmer and humid on May 18 and 19 with highs in the mid-60s to 70s before a dry cooldown on Wednesday, May 20, which will see highs mostly in the 50s across the area and upper 50s and low- to mid-60s on Thursday, May 21, Berschback said.
May 22 will bring another chance for showers and thunderstorms later in the day and into the start of the weekend, Berschback said.

Lions 2026 schedule manageable, but final 4 games will decide it all
A couple quick thoughts from Dave Birkett on the Detroit Lions’ 2026 schedule release, Thursday, May 14.
The Detroit Lions filled most of their biggest needs in last month’s NFL draft. They landed a new starting right tackle, a new rotational defensive end and depth help at linebacker, defensive tackle, cornerback and wide receiver.
The Lions have one of the most complete rosters in the NFL, but the offseason’s not over. Training camps are still more than two months away and they sit $23.6 million under the salary cap, according to NFL Players Association records, the 14th-most available cap space in the NFL.
The Lions do not appear poised to make any notable additions before the league goes on hiatus next month, but they have the flexibility to do so if necessary.
Here are five players they can spend their money on to bolster their roster for 2026:
DE Cam Jordan
The Lions signed DJ Wonnum in free agency and traded up to take Derrick Moore in the second round of the draft. With Aidan Hutchinson locked in at one defensive end spot and Levi Onwuzurike capable of playing the big end role, the Lions have the makings of a solid group of edge rushers. But Moore’s a rookie, and Onwuzurike’s missed more games (43) than he’s played (42) in his five-year career, so there’s reason to believe the Lions still could use insurance at the position.
Jordan is more than insurance. He’s an eight-time Pro Bowler who had 10½ sacks last season at age 36 and won’t play cheap this fall. But he’s still a free agent, and until he signs, he’ll be considered the best fit for the Lions defense given his pass-rushing profile and familiarity with Dan Campbell from their days together with the New Orleans Saints.
DE Jadeveon Clowney
Sticking with the defensive end position, Clowney, like Jordan, is an aging pass rusher – he’ll play this fall at 33 years old – who can collapse a pocket and still showed the ability to get to the quarterback with 8½ sacks for the Dallas Cowboys last year.
If the Lions add another big end, that would free Onwuzurike up to play more inside, where the Lions have several young sub-package rushers (Mekhi Wingo and 2026 draft picks Tyre West and Skyler Gill-Howard) but little proven depth behind starters Alim McNeill and Tyleik Williams.
TE Will Dissly
The Lions missed on the chance to add a tight end in the draft with Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright and Tyler Conklin all on expiring contracts, but my sense is they feel comfortable at the position for 2026 after losing LaPorta and Wright to season-ending injuries last year.
If that changes, Dissly would be the best fit among the tight ends still left in free agency, assuming he’s healthy. Dissly is not the same pass-catching weapon as Jonnu Smith, and he wouldn’t bring the familiarity of Taysom Hill (with Campbell) or Pharoah Brown (with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing), but he’s one of the best run-blocking tight ends in football and did have 50 catches two years ago for the Los Angeles Chargers.
CB Trevon Diggs
I don’t know what Diggs has left in his body after a couple injury-filled seasons. He split his time last year between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers and allowed a passer rating of 154.2, according to Pro Football Reference.
Diggs is a long way removed from the 11-interception season he had in 2021, but at 27 years old, he’s a reclamation project some team will take a chance on this summer. The Lions have Rock Ya-Sin and Ennis Rakestraw waiting in the wings behind starters D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold. I’d take both those players over Diggs. But if they suddenly need more depth at cornerback, Diggs is a better roll of the dice than other available free agents like Marshon Lattimore and L’Jarius Sneed.
NT Daniel Ekuale
The Lions signed Jay Tufele to a minimum deal after the draft to be their backup nose tackle. Tufele made two starts last season for the New York Jets and at 26 years old is younger than anyone on this list. He also missed the end of last season with a foot injury and has a half-sack total in his career.
If the Lions need another option at the nose tackle spot, Ekuale was a part-time player for the Pittsburgh Steelers last year who made 16 starts for the New England Patriots in 2024. He’s a big run stuffer who won’t dent the salary cap and would give the Lions another veteran option behind Williams.
