FARGO — Starting the week of Jan. 14, Xcel Energy is beginning to roll out new smart meters in North Dakota.

Their roughly 100,000 customers across the state will be getting their current meter replaced throughout 2024 and into 2025.

Xcel customers will get a notification on their bill, and will be contacted by phone about a week or two before the swap.

The installation takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and customers won’t be charged for the change.

The biggest improvement these new meters bring is providing data that is much more up-to-date to customers through their My Account app.

“Currently customers can see their usage in a monthly time frame, these meters are going to help whittle that down to about a 15-minute interval, give you more drive into your data so you can see a little more usage on that,” said Shawn Paschke, Xcel Energy’s key account manager for North Dakota.

Fargo and West Fargo will be getting these meters early in 2024. They’ll come to Grand Forks starting in the spring of 2024, and Minot will get them starting late in 2024.
