DICKINSON — Stark County and much of southwest North Dakota experienced significant power outages on Thursday, as a severe winter storm traversed North Dakota, bringing with it a formidable combination of sleet, rain, snow and ice. This inclement weather resulted in approximately 7,200 residents across nine southwestern counties being left without electricity.

The electrical service interruptions in Stark County were indicative of a broader blackout impacting additional regions, including Adams, Bowman, Burke, McKenzie, McHenry, Renville, Slope and Ward. Amidst these outages, many public works and municipal government operations were suspended due to the lack of internet and power, compelling numerous communities’ emergency services to exert considerable effort in addressing incidents precipitated by the harsh weather conditions.

Authorities in Dickinson issued advisories urging the populace to limit outdoor activities to those of utmost necessity and have been coordinating diligently with regional electricity providers in an effort to rectify outages as expeditiously as circumstances permitted. Nevertheless, the icy conditions on Thursday significantly impeded restoration endeavors, culminating in extended periods of power loss in certain locales including in Dickinson, Hettinger and Bowman.

By 4 p.m. on Thursday, electrical service was reinstated to a substantial portion of Dickinson, although reports of persisting outages continued until approximately 8 p.m.

Area law enforcement reported several minor vehicular accidents attributable to the treacherous road conditions, though no severe injuries were reported. Residents have been counseled to exercise extreme caution while driving and to ensure their vehicles are equipped with essential emergency provisions, including food, water and blankets.

Individuals seeking further details regarding the power outages are encouraged to contact their electricity provider directly.
