US House Democratic candidate Trygve Hammer discusses what he is learning from voters in North Dakota
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Trygve Hammer is the only Democrat who entered the race for the North Dakota U.S. House. He announced his campaign earlier in January and has been out on the campaign trail for the past few weeks meeting with potential voters.
Hammer has been traveling the state trying to get his name out there. Recently, he was in Jamestown meeting with voters.
Hammer said he has been learning that many North Dakotans do not know his name. He said even though he ran in 2022 and received more votes than any other state Democrat in that cycle, he realizes he didn’t work hard enough and is taking care of that this time around. Hammer said people are telling him about their overall dissatisfaction with the ND GOP and with the ethics problems they’ve seen in state government.
“A lot of North Dakotans don’t identify themselves as Republican or Democratic. They talk about the Republicans, the Democrats, they have just reflectively been voting for Republicans for a very long time. All we have to do is give them another option and be a campaign that gets out there and reaches out to them, talks to them, and does the work,” said Hammer.
Hammer said right now, his campaign is focused on getting the Democratic nomination and building up campaign funds. He said he will also continue making phone calls, knocking on doors, and having important conversations with voters.
Hammer faces two Republicans in the U.S. House race right now: Rick Becker and Tom Campbell.
