BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – More than two dozen friends and family gathered at the Bismarck Airport Saturday night to welcome home North Dakota’s Youth Olympians.

Zach Brenden and Owen Nelson were part of Team USA’s curling team that competed in the Youth Olympic Games in South Korea.

They finished with a 6-2 record after losing to Switzerland in the quarterfinals.

Local curlers wanted to meet the teens at the airport to show them how proud they are for how they competed and how they represented North Dakota.

“I think this was such a cool experience for these guys,” said Allison Grabow, who organized the welcome home. “I know when they lost in the quarterfinals, they felt a little bad, but I wanted them to know the community is proud of them, their family, their friends, the curling club. We’re all very excited for everything that they did.”

Nelson and Brenden say they’re a little jetlagged, but they’re looking forward to their next competition; they’ll head to junior nationals in March and hope to qualify for Worlds in that division.

Nelson is a senior at Mandan High School. Brenden is a senior at Bismarck Legacy.
