North Dakota Young Republicans hold convention in Fargo

North Dakota Young Republicans met in Fargo on Saturday, Dec. 2, for its mid-term convention. YR members, including several newly elected to the Legislature in 2022, renewed associations and celebrated victories achieved in the 68th Legislature.

The event included an educational seminar headed by the Leadership Institute highlighting winning campaign strategies such as effective messaging. Former Gov. Ed Schafer reminded members what can be achieved by focusing on executing realistic and meaningful solutions.

NDGOP Chairwoman Sandra Sanford shared her recent leadership experiences with the group and encouraged them, saying “It is crucial that young people like you stay involved” to ensure a future that is consistent with traditional American values, moral life and family.

The group unanimously elected Delvin Boehm of Mandan as a new national committeeman to replace Rep. Cole Christensen, District-24, who resigned and is relocating out of state.

The NDYRs also gave awards to outstanding North Dakota leaders. The late Sen. Doug Larsen, who died earlier this fall in an airplane crash, was posthumously honored with the Legacy Award for his leadership in the North Dakota Air National Guard, in the Senate, where
he was serving as the chairman of the Industry, Business and Labor Committee, and for his encouragement and support of the YR mission.

Rick Becker, was presented the Legendary Award for his steadfast dedication to American ideals. Becker spoke about how the future will look and how it will be determined by how young people respond to the challenges the state and country face today.

State Chairman Caleb Mehlhoff of Spiritwood, who presided over the convention, gave a summary of the accomplishments of the group in 2023, noting that at least five YRs are now serving in the state Legislature.

“They are well-informed, principled and patriotic; we are very proud of them.” Mehlhoff said. “I am sure there will be more YRs running in the next election.”
