North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum vetoes bill banning ranked choice voting and approval voting
(Fargo, ND) — North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has vetoed Home Invoice 1273.
The invoice, which bans approval voting and ranked alternative voting, handed each the Home and Senate with vote margins clearing the two-thirds majority threshold that lawmakers would wish to override the governor’s veto.
“Home Invoice 1273 undermines native management of native political subdivisions exercising their granted powers underneath house rule constitution, particularly prohibiting utilizing an approval voting methodology or ranked-choice voting methodology in native elections. This invoice additionally applies restrictions to native elections held by counties, cities and different political subdivisions, no matter whether or not they have adopted a house rule constitution,” wrote Burgum.
The Home is ready to vote on an override Friday.
If that vote is profitable, the invoice would return to the Senate for an override vote.
