North Dakota Game and Fish has thin ice warning for eager anglers – KVRR Local News
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – North Dakota game and fish are warning outdoor enthusiasts to be aware of this year’s early ice conditions.
With this year’s unusually warm winter, ice fishers are getting impatient to get on the ice.
ND game and fish says there needs to be a minimum of 4 inches of ice for a group to walk on ranging to 15 inches of ice for trucks to drive on.
Drill testing holes and using an ice chisel are two ways to make sure the ice you are on is safe.
“Don’t let the calendar deceive you. It is December oftentimes we have very good ice. There is no guarantee that once we get to Christmas or once we get to the new year that we are going to have safe ice. It can vary from year to year, it can vary from lake to lake, and from day to day.” Said outreach biologist at North Dakota game and fish Doug Leier.
If you are with somebody and they do fall through the ice call 911 immediately.
