New driver’s license design available in North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D. — Newly designed driver’s licenses and photo ID cards are now being issued in Bismarck by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT).

The new design does not mean North Dakota residents must get a new driver’s license, said Brad Schaffer, the department of transportation’s driver license division director.

The current driver’s licenses are still good until their expiration dates, he noted.

New cards feature the North Dakota badlands and include a sunrise ultraviolet image alongside an updated state logo, the press release said.

“I am proud of the new artwork and security measures in place,” said NDDOT Director Ron Henke. “Over the last year, our team has worked hard to get this design implemented to ensure the highest level of protection for citizens.”

There is “state-of-the-art technology” included on the new card, according to the release, that is intended to make it more difficult to counterfeit.

“North Dakota is the first state to have the ‘squircle’ which is a square and circle that contains a dynamic look-through element,” the release said. “There is also an ultraviolet response for the optically variable ghost portrait over the photo.”

While the initial rollout began in Bismarck, the newly designed card will be available in other cities throughout the month.
