ND state wrestling tournament kicks off with individual competition

FARGO — More than 600 wrestlers from across North Dakota descended upon the Fargodome Thursday with the dream of winning a state championship.

The field of title hopefuls was narrowed to 78 across three classes as the individual competition at the state wrestling tournament kicked off in the morning and concluded with semifinal bouts.

Several local and regional grapplers punched their tickets to Friday’s individual finals, which are set for 4:30 p.m.

Class A

In the Class A boys field, Bismarck Legacy topped the team standings after Day 1 with 124.5 points. They were followed by seven-time defending individual team champion Bismarck with 115 points, Bismarck Century with 102, Dickinson with 100.5 and Williston with 95 to round out the top five.

Both West Fargo Sheyenne and Fargo Davies each sent two wrestlers through to Friday’s finals.

For the Mustangs, Stetson Gisselbeck punched his ticket at 152 pounds while Landon Zink advanced at 160.

Gisselbeck, a senior, worked his way to the semifinal round with back-to-back technical falls before defeating Watford City senior Brier Arnegard via 5-0 decision to reach the 152 championship.

There, top-seeded Gisselbeck (34-5) will go for his first state championship against No. 2 seed Conrad Kopari of Dickinson (46-8) who’s also in search of his first.

Zink will seek a repeat title after the sophomore claimed the 145-pound final last season. He earned a technical fall and pin en route to the semis before a 10-0 major decision over Mandan senior Kaullen Hegney.

No. 2 seed Zink (33-7) will take on top-seeded Williston junior Tyson Rice (37-10) in the 160 final as Rice seeks his first title.

The Eagles will see two in Friday’s finals with freshman Cole Sauvageau at 139 pounds and junior Wyatt Kosidowski at 172.

Sauvageau picked up two technical falls in the opening and quarterfinal rounds before picking up a 16-4 major decision over Bismarck Century sophomore Carter Wylde in the semifinals.

No. 2 seed Sauvageau (41-7) will go for his first podium-topper when he takes on two-time state champion Koltyn Grebel (44-1) of Valley City in the 139-pound bout.

Grebel, a senior, won the 106-pound title in 2022 and followed it up at 113 in 2023. He finished runner-up in the 133 final last season.

After earning three falls en route to this year’s championship bout, including one over Bismarck senior Carson Lardy at the 3:53 mark of the semis, top-seeded Grebel will have a chance to match his older brother Koye — now wrestling for Division I Nebraska — with three individual titles.

Kosidowski aims for a second consecutive crown after standing atop the podium in the 160-pound final as a sophomore last season. Up to 172 this year, Kosidowski earned two falls before a 15-0 technical fall in the semis over West Fargo Sheyenne senior Maddox Weigel.

Top-seeded Kosidowski (31-1) will face Mandan freshman and No. 2 seed Tate Sailer (36-6) in Friday’s 172 bout.

Regionally, Devils Lake had a strong showing with three finalists set to battle for state championships on Friday.

Sophomore Rylan Samuelson, senior Owen Lindstrom and senior Braxton Rance all advanced to finals bouts for the Firebirds.

At 114 pounds, Samuelson defeated Sheyenne freshman Grady Olafson for the second time in the last week in what was a semifinal rematch of last weekend’s East Region tournament. Prior to his 4-0 decision over Olfason, Samuelson worked his way to the semis with a first-round fall and an 11-4 decision in the quarterfinals.

No. 2 seed Samuelson (29-9) will face top-seeded Dickinson junior Jake Glaser (42-5) in the 114 final. Glaser is the defending champion at 107 while Samuelson seeks his first title.

Lindstrom will also chase his first championship after advancing in the 121-pound bracket. He earned two falls to reach the semis and a third at the 4:48 mark over Bismarck Century junior Grady Iverson.

Second-seeded at 121, Lindstrom (38-4) will face two-time state champ and top-seeded Nicolas Enzminger (44-0), the Bismarck Legacy junior who took the 106 final in 2023 and 114 last season.

In the heavyweight bracket at 285 pounds, Rance earned a fall in first-round action before a major decision in the quarters. He proceeded to defeat Williston senior Landon Riely via 8-1 decision in the semis and will look for his first state championship.

Rance (32-6) is the No. 3 seed at 285 and will square off with top-seeded Darion Bitz (42-3), the Bismarck Century junior and defending champ at 285.

Class B

Williams County paced individual team scoring with 104 points after Day 1. South Border was next with 95 points followed by New Salem/Almont with 90, Velva with 84 and Northern Lights with 59.

Kindred freshman Tanner Menge was all smiles after his semifinal match. No. 5 seed Menge upset top-seeded and defending 172-pound champion Drew Zwak of Minot Bishop Ryan with a 5-4 sudden-victory win in the 172 semifinals.

Menge picked up a penalty point in the overtime period and held on to advance to the title match over the Lions senior. Menge had a pin in the first round and earned a 9-4 decision in the quarterfinals.

Menge (42-9) will face off against No. 3 seed Williams County senior Rocker Aguilar (31-6) in the title match as both go for their first.

Another upset came to fruition in the heavyweight bracket. Williams County senior Matthew Jacobs entered the tournament with the No. 6 seed at 285 pounds and battled his way into the championship.

Jacobs went toe-to-toe with No. 3 seed Lisbon senior Aiden Hinkle in the quarterfinals before earning his second straight pin 4:51 into the match. In the semifinals, Jacobs was tasked with No. 2 seed junior Cole Nitschke of South Border.

The pair battled through the first two periods, but Jacobs controlled the third and won by 5-0 decision. His toughest test is yet to come, as Jacobs (30-14) will face Minot Bishop Ryan No. 1 seed Cade Okeson (49-1) for the crown. Okeson, a junior, earned two straight pins en route to a 4-0 decision in the semifinals. Jacobs and Okeson will battle for their first championship.

In the 139-pound bracket, Hillsboro/Central Valley top-seeded junior Sawyer Owens grappled his way to the title bout. Owens pinned No. 2 seed freshman Cruz Reinke from Lisbon at 3:06 of the semifinal match to advance to the championship.

Owens, who won the 133-pound championship last season, earned a technical fall in the first round and won 9-3 over LaMoure-Litchville/Marion senior Jace Duffy in the quarterfinals. Owens (51-1) will take on No. 2 seed freshman Brextyn Yanish (42-4) of Velva in the finals. Yanish had a pair of major decision victories to earn the berth.

Oakes sophomore Mathias Dahlstrom recorded a trio of tech falls on his way to the 133-pound championship. The top-seeded Dahlstrom teched fifth-seeded Killdeer freshman Jack 5:52 into the semifinals match.

Dahlstrom (38-3) faces off against No. 2 seed senior Kruiser Burns (30-5) from Grafton in the championship. Burns notched a 10-1 major decision over Linton-HMB senior Zach Dockter and is the defending champion at 121 pounds.

South Border senior Shane Nitschke will go for a third consecutive state title. The top seed at 215 pounds had a trio of pins to advance to the championship. Nitschke (32-3) squares off against the No. 3 seed senior Carter Engebretson (26-4) from Harvey/Wells County for the crown.

Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter senior Dalton Feist is also seeking a third championship after winning the 106-pound final in 2023 and the 114 crown last season.

Feist is the top seed at 114 pounds this year and notched a pin at 1:37 over South Border sophomore Jared Schilling in the semis.

Feist (40-2) will take on No. 2 seed Williams County freshman Tristian Miller (29-0) in the 114 final.

Girls

Heading up the girls team scores after Day 1 are Bismarck with 108.5 points. Minot with 91.5, Bismarck Legacy with 90.5, Mandan with 71.5 and Grand Forks with 70.5.

Central Cass sophomore Anna White has made the championship match a February tradition.

The two-time defending 100-pound champion battled her way into the title bout once more. Top-seeded White tallied a pair of pins to advance to the semifinal round. White then mustered two takedowns to power a 6-0 decision win over Rugby sophomore Bria Brossart.

White (41-1) will seek a three-peat at 100 when she takes on No. 2 seed Mandan sophomore Brooklyn Lafrenz (47-5). Lafrenz opened the day with a pin and technical fall before garnering a 16-4 major decision over Williston eighth-grader Maci Brouillette in the semis.

Bismarck’s Julia Araujo and Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter’s Alexis Schneider are both vying to go four-for-four in state title matches.

Schneider, seeded No. 1 at 130 pounds and ranked No. 15 nationally, earned three falls on her way to the final including at the 2:53 mark over Des-Lacs Burlington junior Kashtyn Bredahl in the semis.

Schneider (49-0), a senior, will face off against Bismarck No. 2 seed freshman Maggie Thielges (43-4) in the 130-pound bout.

Araujo, a sophomore, wasted no time with three pins in under a combined two minutes. She topped LaMoure-Litchville-Marion’s Clara Steffes in 26 seconds during the 148-pound semis.

Top-seeded Araujo (42-1) will battle Fargo No. 2 seed junior Webeline Naklen (44-3) for the title at 148.

Naklen, in search of her first title, pinned Dickinson senior Jamia Cunningham at 5:53 of the semis to advance to the championship. Naklen earned a tech fall and major decision prior to the semis pin.

Naklen’s Stingers teammate, senior Koiline Govergo, had three pins to make the 190-pound finals. Second-seeded Govergo topped No. 3 seed Lisbon junior Nevaeh Buffett with a pin at 2:24 in the semifinals.

Govergo (36-4) will go for her first title and take on top-seeded Bismarck sophomore Cambree Anderson (39-2) who is the defending champ at 190.

In the 106-pound bracket, No. 4 seed Kindred sophomore Taryn Roesler upset top-seeded Kenmare-Bowbells/Burrke Central seventh-grader Taley Michel in the semifinals to earn a championship appearance. Roesler controlled the entirety of the match in a 10-2 major decision against Michel.

Roesler (25-3) will take on No. 3 seed Pembina County North freshman Charlotte Crowston (42-13) in the 106 final as both seek their first state titles.

After a title win at 106 pounds last season, South Border eighth-grader Ava Litsey is back in the final at 112 this year. Top-seeded Litsey edged No. 4 seed Williston sophomore Taylor Brouillette via 9-8 decision in the semis.

Litsey (39-0) will face No. 2 seed Bismarck Legacy eighth-grader Scelia Maneze (45-7) in the 112 title bout as Litsey looks for a repeat.

Top-seeded Grand Forks senior Emily Novak rolled into the 170-pound title match off a trio of pins, including one over Dickinson junior Kolbi McElwain at 3:48 of the semifinal round.

Novak will seek a three-peat after winning the 155 final in 2023 and 2024. Novak (36-0) will face No. 2 seed Mandan sophomore Alexis Storsved (39-1) in the 170 final.

At 136 pounds, Novak’s KnightRiders teammate Kaylee Kurz also advanced to the final in the 136-pound bracket. Kurz, the No. 2 seed sophomore, topped Carrington senior Jazmyn Ybarra in the semis via a narrow 1-0 decision.

Kurz (39-6) will face top-seeded Bismarck Legacy junior Aleiya Cullinan (43-0) in the 136 final. Cullinan is the defending champ at 136 while Kurz will go for her first title.
