ND House passes legislation to legalize sports betting

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Home on Thursday accepted laws that will legalize sports activities betting within the state, sending the proposal to the state Senate.

If the Senate approves the measure, it will be positioned on the November 2024 poll for residents to determine whether or not to vary the state structure to permit sports activities betting. At present, sports activities betting is allowed solely at tribal casinos within the state.

Republican Rep. Greg Stemen, of Fargo, argued legalizing sports activities betting would usher in thousands and thousands of {dollars} in income to the state, and supply oversight and regulation.

Stemen mentioned the American Gaming Affiliation estimates as many as 138,000 North Dakotans are betting over $300 million yearly, together with $30 million in revenues to offshore betting books.

Opponents argued the measure would worsen playing addictions and result in ruined lives.

Thirty-five states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico at the moment authorize some type of sports activities betting.
