Legislative committee votes to update names of some North Dakota facilities
State Hospital in Jamestown
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO PRAIRIE PUBLIC RADIO) – An interim Legislative committee has authorised a proposed state Constitutional modification to alter the descriptions of three state-run services.
The varsity for the deaf in Devils Lake could be modified from “the varsity for the deaf and dumb” to “the varsity for the deaf and listening to impaired.”
The state hospital in Jamestown would change from a “state hospital for the insane” to “state hospital for people with psychological sickness.”
In Grafton, it might change from an “establishment for the feebleminded” to “a facility for people with developmental disabilities.”
Rugby Republican State Consultant Jon Nelson chairs the Acute Psychiatric Remedy Committee. “Among the language that was used previously simply isn’t applicable at the moment,” Nelson stated.
Nelson says his committee voted unanimously for the proposed modification. If the 2023 Legislature approves, it might be on the poll in 2024.
