BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Canada is North Dakota’s number one trading partner and accounts for 25% of exports in agriculture, energy and machinery.

Last week, President Donald Trump announced 35% of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, effective Aug. 1.

SweetPro Feeds in Wahalla, North Dakota, produces feed supplements for livestock. They export to Canada and buy ingredients for their products from the country. Tariffs add risk as SweetPro Feeds cultivates growth in Canada.

“It’s a painful experience because of the uncertainties in this, but it’s also, there is a necessity to it, to level the playing field,” said Thornberg.

Thornberg said that he doesn’t think the recent tariff hike on Canada will affect his business unless Canada retaliates.
