The Jamestown Sun hands out these bravos this week:

  • Bravo to Gussner Elementary School, which was named a Blue Ribbon school this week by the U.S. Department of Education. Also receiving the national honor in North Dakota were Rugby High School and Taylor-Richardton Elementary School. According to the U.S. Department of Education, recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups on assessments. The department said National Blue Ribbon School leaders articulate a vision of excellence, hold everyone to high standards and demonstrate effective and innovative teaching and learning. The schools value and support teachers and staff through meaningful professional learning. Families, communities and educators work together toward common goals.  There were 353 schools recognized this year.
  • Bravo to the 156 soldiers from the 191st Military Police Company who returned from their 10-month deployment to the U.S. Central Command at Camp Kuwait and were welcomed on Sept. 17 in Fargo. Members of the 131st Military Police Battalion, 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade and the North Dakota Army National Guard attended the ceremony as well as North Dakota Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller and U.S. Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, reported a story in The Forum. The 191st is headquartered in Fargo, with a detachment in Grand Forks.
  • Buffalo chip to the person who stole a statue of the Virgin Mary from outside of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. The theft occurred on Sept. 10, according to The Forum. The Fargo Police Department is encouraging anyone with information on the theft to contact the department. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by texting the keyword “FAR- GOPD” and the tip to 847411.
  • Bravo to this year’s inductees in the Jamestown High School Hall of Fame: the Jamestown High School 1996 Boys Cross-Country State Championship Team, the 1996 girls cross-country team, Gregg Greeno, Jim Reisenour and Justin Schweitzer were inducted at the homecoming pep rally Friday, Sept. 22, at Jerry Meyer Arena.
  • Bravo to Alexa Carlson of Spiritwood, who qualified for the Junior World Finals in Las Vegas in December. She and the family’s horse, Magnum, will compete in barrel racing and pole bending after taking top honors in the two events in Montana in August.
