University of Nebraska Board of Regents to consider Volleyball Day alcohol sales

LINCOLN, Neb. — Husker fans may soon be able to wet their whistle as the University of Nebraska Board of Regents are considering allowing alcohol to be sold at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 30, on what’s being called Volleyball Day.

Universities across the country are selling alcohol at sporting events. It has been a hot topic in the sporting world, and it’s now at the forefront in Nebraska with the Nebraska Board of Regents verdict looming.

Some Nebraskans feel the board has a simple decision coming up.

“Everyone drinks on college sports days anyway, so why not include it at the event,” said Chloe Bessler, a Ravenna resident.

If the board decides to go forward with their approval, it will mark the second time alcohol has been sold at Memorial Stadium since 2021.

On the matter of the Cornhuskers doing it again, Craig Loeffelholz, a Ravenna man, gave his thoughts: “I don’t really don’t have much of an opinion on that. I think it would be a big revenue boost for the university, but as far as whether they do or do not, I don’t really have an opinion on that.”

Detractors of the proposed selling of alcohol at the over 90,000-spectator volleyball event that will feature UNL and UNK worry about situations not being under control.

“I think there will be problems to start with because there are always problems involving alcohol, but I think they should be able to get it under control,” Bessler said.

On the thought of potential incidents at Volleyball Day, Bessler said, “I think as long as they are allowed to shut people off when they have gone too far, I think they should be in good hands.”

This topic seemed to be a moot point with the public as some Husker fans care while others just don’t care.

However, it’s only a matter of time as to whether or not alcohol will flow at Memorial Stadium.
