Nebraska’s Berke Büyüktuncel to play in FIBA U20 EuroBasket
LINCOLN, Neb. (Huskers.com) – Nebraska rising sophomore Berke Büyüktuncel will be in action beginning this weekend as the Republic of Türkiye begins play in the 2024 FIBA U20 EuroBasket in Gdynia, Poland.
Türkiye is in a group with Belgium, North Macedonia and Spain and will play its group games beginning on Saturday against Belgium. The tournament runs until Sunday, July 21st and all of the games will be available on FIBA’s YouTube page.
Büyüktuncel, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward, is an experienced player on the international stage, as he has made five previous national youth team tournaments since 2021 and made his debut on the Senior National Team in 2023. At last year’s U20 European Championships, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Büyüktuncel led Türkiye to a third-place finish at the U19 Basketball World Cup, earning a spot to the “All-Star Five” at the event, as he averaged 11.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest.
Earlier this week, he was featured by FIBA as one of the Players to Watch in the event preview.
As a freshman at UCLA, Büyüktuncel averaged 4.9 points and 2.7 rebounds in 24 games, as he missed the first three games of the year awaiting clearance from the NCAA while also missing time with a pair of injuries. He averaged 17.5 minutes per game while making seven of his eight starts in Pac-12 play for the Bruins before joining the Husker program earlier this summer.

Nebraska flag football announces home facilities
Nebraska flag football announced that it will play its games at Barbara Hibner Field. This is the current home of the Huskers’ soccer program. This announcement was made on Friday afternoon.
The stadium seats 2,500 fans. The capacity can expand via berms and standing-room-only areas. The team will play its first season in 2028 and will hold 15 scholarships for female student-athletes. The season itself will run from January to May.
The program will be coached by Liz Sowers, a former five-time national champion coach at Ottawa University. The associate head coach will be her sister, Katie Sowers. Sowers was the first woman to coach and a Super Bowl. She will be the program’s top assistant.
In any event, it sounds like the program is really beginning to take shape. This will be exciting to watch and will offer another opportunity for some of the top athletes in the country to play at Nebraska.
